Collection Instructions:

Follow standard aseptic collection procedures. Within 1 hour of collection, express the aspirated synovial fluid directly into a pre-filled CytoLyt Specimen Collection Cup. DO NOT pour off ANY of the CytoLyt fluid prior to adding the sample.

 

NOTE: THIS PROCEDURE IS FOR CYTOLOGY SPECIMENS ONLY. Please refer to the Lab Test Directory for other tests that are performed on synovial fluid.

Specimen Transport:

Place specimen container inside a biohazard bag with the request form in the outside pocket. Transport specimen to laboratory.

Unacceptable Criteria:

Specimens submitted in syringes, blood collection tubes, sterile containers, or formalin.

Interpretation:

Report provides intrepretation.  Contact the UWHC Cytology Lab at (608) 263-3205 for further information.

Test Limitations:

Abnormal findings must be correlated with history and other test results.

Additional Information:

Request form must include patient's name, medical record number, date of birth, specimen source, collection date, clinic and phone number, clinician's full name and pager number, and pertinent clinical history.
