Clinical Information:

Diaphragm scrapings are utilized for staging gynecological malignancies and are taken at the time of surgery.

Days Performed: Mon-Fri, 0800-1700.

In-Lab Turnaround Time: 1 - 2 days.

Follow standard aseptic collection procedures.

1. Write the patient's last name, first initial and medical record number IN PENCIL on the frosted end of the glass slide.

2. Collect the specimen.

3. Gently spread the cellular material in a thin layer onto the slide. Fix IMMEDIATELY with spray fixative.

4. Place slide(s)in a plastic slide holder or sterile screw cap container; label with a pre-printed patient label.

NOTE: For slides placed in a screw cap container, DO NOT allow the slides to touch one another. Place two slides back to back with the cellular material facing out. Or separate multiple slides with a paperclip attached to the frosted end of the slide.

Collection Volume: 1 - 4 slides

Specimen Transport:

Place plastic slide holder or specimen container inside a biohazard bag with the request form in the outside pocket of the bag. Transport specimen to laboratory.

Unacceptable Criteria:

Slides broken beyond repair. Air dried or formalin fixed slides.

Test Limitations:

Poorly fixed or air-dried smears seriously impairs microscopic interpretation. Abnormal findings must be correlated with history and other test results.

Additional Information:

Paperwork must include patient's name, medical record number, date of birth, specimen source, collection date, clinic and phone number, clinician's full name and pager number, and pertinent clinical history.
