Clinical Information:

Measurement of transferrin levels in serum aids in the diagnosis of malnutrition, acute inflammation, infection and red blood cell disorders, such as iron deficiency anemia.

Days Performed: Daily, 24 hours.

In-Lab Turnaround Time: 4 hours.

Stat In-Lab Turnaround Time: 1 hour.

Specimen Processing:

Centrifuge within 2 hours of draw. If a complete barrier has not formed, transfer cell-free serum/plasma to clear plastic vial. Refrigerate.

Specimen Transport:

Transport specimen to UWHC Hospital Laboratory. Transport with coolant pack if coming from clinic location.
