Collection Container: Green cap with yellow ring (PST)

Also Acceptable: Green top, Red cap with yellow ring (SST), Red top

Collection Instructions:

Tube must be at least one quarter full.

Collection Volume: 3 mL

Pediatric Collection Volume: 1 mL

Stability Ambient:

2 days

Stability Frozen:

Sample Analyzed: Plasma or serum

Testing Volume: 1 mL

Pediatric Testing Volume: 0.5 mL

Specimen Processing:

Centrifuge immediately. If a complete barrier has not formed, transfer cell-free plasma/serum to plastic vial. Tube or plastic vial must be 25% full and capped. Refrigerate.

Specimen Transport:

Transport specimen to laboratory. Transport with coolant pack if coming from clinic location.

Unacceptable Criteria:

Potassium, glucose, AST: Hemolyzed specimens and whole blood specimens greater than 2 hours old when received by the laboratory are not acceptable.


CO2: Tubes must be 25% full and capped.
