Patient Preparation:

Patient must be fasting for a minimum of 10 hours and be heparin free for 48 hours if ordered as part of a lipid panel. The patient can only have water during the fasting period.

If the HDL cholesterol is ordered alone, fasting is not required.

Collection Container: Green cap with yellow ring (PST)

 < 40 mg/dL Low (increased cardiovascular risk)
 > 60 mg/dL High (decreased cardiovascular risk)
