Stability Refridgerated:

7 days removed from cells, clot or gel

8 hours on gel

Stability Frozen:

30 days

Sample Analyzed: Serum or plasma

Testing Volume: 0.5 mL

Pediatric Testing Volume: 0.2 mL

Specimen Processing:

Centrifuge. Redraw specimen if hemolysis is present. Transfer cell-free sample to plastic vial. Refrigerate.

Specimen Transport:

Transport specimen to the laboratory. Transport with coolant pack if coming from clinic location.

Unacceptable Criteria:

Hemolyzed specimens are not acceptable.


18 years and up: ≥7.0 ng/mL


Interpretation Type: Expected Results

Test Limitations:

Patients receiving therapy with certain pharmaceuticals, e.g. methotrexate, aminopterin, or leucovorin, are contraindicated because of the cross-reactivity of folate binding protein with these compounds.


Results may be affected if patient has developed heterophilic antibodies due to exposure to animal blood products.
