Methodology: Turbidometric

Days Performed: Daily, 24 hours.

In-Lab Turnaround Time: 4 hours.

Stat In-Lab Turnaround Time: 1 hour.

Patient Preparation:

No vigorous exercise during 4 hours prior to collection. Patients should not collect the urine specimen during menses, since blood in the sample may affect test results.

Specimen: Random urine

Collection Container: Sterile screw cap container

Collection Instructions:

Collect in a urine container with no preservatives. First morning void is preferred. A blood-free specimen is preferred.

Collection Volume: Entire collection

Stability Refridgerated:

2 weeks

Stability Frozen:

5 months @ -70°C

Sample Analyzed: Urine aliquot

Testing Volume: 1 mL

Pediatric Testing Volume: 0.4 mL

Specimen Processing:

Mix specimen. Transfer 10 mL into a screw cap container. Refrigerate specimen. Do not freeze.

Specimen Transport:

Transport entire specimen to the laboratory at close of collection. Transport with coolant pack if coming from clinic location.

Unacceptable Criteria:

Collection container contaminated with preservative is not acceptable.

Interpretation:

2 years and up: 0-30 mg/L

 

A microalbumin/creatinine ratio will be calculated whenever a spot urine 

microalbumin and random urine creatinine are ordered together.

 

Albumin/Creatinine Ratio reference range:

 

24 months and up (male and female): 0 - 29 mg/g cret

Interpretive Guidelines:

< 30 mg/g cret  

Normal

30-299 mg/g cret  

Microalbuminuria
