To determine Metabolic capacity use Metabolic Equivalents of Task (METS)
Ask, “Can you, without chest pressure/pain or shortness of breath…”
1 MET = Take care of yourself, such as eat, dress or use the toilet?
4 METS = Walk up a flight of steps or a hill?
4-10 METS = Do heavy work around the house such as scrubbing floors or lifting heavy furniture?
10 METS = Participate in strenuous sports such as swimming, singles tennis, football, basketball and skiing?
