Ultrasound-guided Liver Biopsies

  1. Please indicate whether the biopsy is “random” or “targeted” to a specific lesion. If it is a targeted lesion, then consider discussing with one of the abdominal radiologists prior to ordering to reduce the possibility of a misunderstanding.
  2. For inpatients, an INR and platelet count needs to be ordered and drawn within 7 days prior to the procedure.
  3. For outpatients, an INR and platelet count needs to be ordered and drawn within 6 months prior to the procedure.
  4. If any special testing needs to be performed, such as heavy metal testing, please indicate this in the request.
  5. Please note that anticoagulants often need to be discontinued prior to this procedure. If you have any questions regarding the need for, or timing of this, please contact one of the abdominal radiologists to discuss.

Paracentesis/Thoracentesis

  1. Please indicate whether this is diagnostic or therapeutic and whether a paracentesis or thoracentesis is needed.
    • If diagnostic, please place orders for the tests you would like to be performed on the fluid, or indicate the needed tests in the request.
  2. For inpatients, an INR and platelet count needs to be ordered and drawn within 7 days prior to the procedure.
  3. For outpatients, an INR and platelet count needs to be ordered and drawn within 6 months prior to the procedure.

Other Image-guided Biopsies
