Specimen collection instructions are detailed in the Lab Test Directory. Standard Precautions should be used in handling all specimens. All specimens of blood or other potentially infectious materials should be placed in a container which prevents leakage during collection, handling, processing, storage, transport or shipping. Call Client Services at (608) 263-7060 for specific questions on collection and transport.

Venous blood collection must be done according to proper protocol. The Clinical Laboratory and Standards Institute™ (CLSI, formerly NCCLS) is a reference for guidelines on the proper collection of laboratory specimens. The Clinical Laboratories and Nursing Administration provide training on the proper collection of specimens by employees of UW Hospital and Clinics. This includes venipuncture, blood culture collection, use of venous access devices, pediatric collection and others.

Questions on specific collection procedures can be addressed to either Phlebotomy Manager at (608) 262-0603 or (608) 263-5049.
