Focus

The UWHC Surgical Pathology Laboratory receives tissue specimens from the operating rooms and clinics for consultation and diagnosis. Gross and microscopic examination, frozen section and a variety of staining techniques are used in the diagnostic process. The laboratory also performs examination of materials referred from other health service providers for initial diagnosis or consultation.

UWHC Policies 7.01 Pathology Specimen Care and Handling and Patient Care describe the requirements for submission, identification, handling and release of tissue specimens including exemptions and guidelines for limited examination.

Autopsy Services

Autopsy Pathology is provided for UWHC patients and as an outreach program through the UW Department of Pathology. UWHC Policy 4.21 Disposition of the Body After Death describes the procedures to obtain permission for an autopsy.
