Focus

These guidelines will apply to all visitors and health care providers seeing patients in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU).

  1. All visitors and health care providers entering the PICU should wash their hands with the waterless, alcohol-based hand cleaning solution supplied at the entrance to the PICU.
  2. All visitors and health care providers entering the PICU should clean their hands with soap and water or the waterless, alcohol-based hand cleaning solution supplied in the patient room prior to and after contact with the patient.
  3. All health care providers will perform hand hygiene with soap and water or waterless, alcohol-based hand cleaning solution between patients.
  4. Use of waterless, alcohol-based hand cleaning solution is acceptable and preferred for hand hygiene unless hands are visibly soiled. If hands are visibly soiled they should be washed with soap and water.
  5. Nursing and PICU staff will be encouraged to ask visitors and health care providers if they have washed their hands prior to contact with any patient in the PICU.
