Your pre-surgery teaching appointment takes about 2-3 hours, depending on the type of surgery
you’re going to have and how healthy you are. If you are under 18 years old or not legally
competent, your parent or legal guardian needs to be with you.

Take the medicines that you take every morning on the morning of your appointment too, unless
you’ve been told you shouldn’t take some of them. Feel free to eat before you come. You do not
need to fast for this appointment.

What should I bring to my appointment?
 The folder of information given to you
 Insurance information and HMO referral, if needed
 Name, address, and phone number of your primary doctor and any other doctors you have
 List of your medicines including vitamins and supplements
 Information about recent physical exams, blood tests, x-rays, EKGs, and other tests,
unless it has been faxed to our clinic

What to expect at your appointment
 We will explain the procedure, alternatives, benefits, risks, and complications of your
surgery. After you and your family’s questions are answered, you will be asked to sign a
written consent form for the surgery.
 We will explain what to expect after your surgery and how to take care of yourself when
you go home.

 We will talk with you about your list of medicines, vitamins, and supplements. We will
