Disposable Medical Supplies

The staff at UW Health will work with you
to plan for the care and supplies that you
may need when you return home. This
includes helping you to find the provider,
dependent on your health insurance, to get
disposable medical supplies.

Your insurance plan or health maintenance
organization (HMO) may or may not pay for
all or part of these supplies. If you have a
second plan, it may or may not cover all or
part of any payment.. The nursing staff, case
managers and social workers can help you
search your choices for the best coverage.

Medical Assistance
Medical Assistance (MA, Badger Care,
Forward Health) may or may not pay for
these supplies. Your home medical supply
company can answer questions you may
have about coverage for supplies. For
urologic and incontinence supplies, such as
urinary catheters and Chux pads, the State of
Wisconsin MA program works with an out-
of-state provider.

Medicare Part A
Medicare rules require that any home health
care agency that arranges your visits must
provide you with certain disposable medical
supplies. With some exceptions, the home
health agency provides these supplies at no
charge. This includes supplies that Medicare
has been paying for in the past that may or
may not be related to your need for home
health services. These include dressings,
catheters, and ostomy supplies. Your home
health agency will work with your doctor to
order your supplies.

Per policy, medications and personal
hygiene items are not covered or
provided by the home health agency.
Medicare has a list of “routine and non-
routine” supplies for home health care.
You will be notified if the supplies you
need are outside of this list. If you have
Medicare part B or a second insurance
plan, it may or may not cover your
supplies. Below is a partial list of
available suppliers. We recommend that you
check with your insurance about your
options.
