SMART logoSMART is UWHC's evidence-based program for safe patient handling. Overall, there has been a significant decrease in the cost of staff injuries following the initial implementation of the SMART program. Worker’s compensation claims related to patient handling injuries at UWHC decreased from $1.1 million in 2011 to $515,000 in 2012. Being SMART will assist UWHC in continuing to decrease injuries to health care workers who move patients, improve health care worker satisfaction and improve patient outcomes. The overall goal is to continue expanding the program throughout UWHC in an effort to change our culture to one of safety for both patients and employees.

Healthcare Worker Injury Prevention Survey

Completing a unit assessment before implementation of Safe Patient Handling is an important component of implementing the program. The survey will help to identify risky moves and turn them into SMART moves. Please take the Health Care Worker Injury Prevention Survey as instructed by your unit leadership.
