The Geriatric Resource Nurse is an educational and clinical intervention model that prepares staff nurses to be the clinical resource person on geriatric issues for other nurses on their unit. GRN's are trained by Geriatric Advanced Practice Nurses to identify and address specific geriatric syndromes such as falls and confusion, and to implement care strategies that promote patient mobility.
What is the NICHE program, and why are we choosing to develop one at UW?
Developed by the John A. Hartford Foundation institute for Geriatric Nursing at New York University, Nurses Improving Care of Health System Elderly (NICHE) is a nationally recognized geriatric nursing program. The goal of NICHE is to focus on nursing interventions that have a direct and positive impact on the care of older adults. Developing a NICHE program will help us modify nursing practice to better meet the needs of this growing population.
