UW Health Hospitals

Target Patient Population:
UW Health adult patients with status post intubation. This includes patients intubated at UW Hospitals
and those transferred after intubation elsewhere.

Purpose Statement:
To delegate authority from the attending physician to Registered Nurses (RNs) to place orders for post
intubation supportive care.

Who May Carry Out This Delegation Protocol:
Registered Nurses (RNs) trained in the use of this protocol.

Guidelines for Implementation:
1. This protocol is initiated when a patient has been intubated. Only orders explicitly listed in the IP –
Post Intubation – Delegation Protocol – Adult – order set are authorized for delegated action.
2. A provider will be consulted regarding OG tube placement for these patients.
3. The RN will review the patient’s medical record to determine if any of the orders in the order set
have already been placed as to avoid duplicates.
