Purpose Statement:
This protocol is to delegate authority from the UW Organ and Tissue Donation medical director or his physician
designee caring for the patient to organ procurement coordinators to initiate the following order sets:
• IP - Comprehensive Brain Dead Donor (BDD) – Adult – Supplemental [4078]
• IP – Brain Dead Donor (BDD) – Pediatric – Supplemental [4287]

This delegation protocol ONLY applies to order sets 4078 and 4287.

The following order sets are specifically EXCLUDED from this delegation protocol:
• IP – Comprehensive Donation After Cardiac Death (DCD) – Adult – Intensive Care – Supplemental [3627]
• IP – Donation after Cardiac Death (DCD) – Pediatric – Supplemental [4227]

Who May Carry Out This Delegation Protocol:
Organ procurement coordinators who are Registered Nurses (RNs) and are trained in the use of this protocol.

Guidelines for Implementation:
1. Prior to initiating the protocol; the patient must be declared brain dead by an attending physician and
consent for organ donation obtained (from next of kin, or documentation that patient had previously
designated themself as an organ donor via donor registry, driver’s license, or advance directive), after which
care for that patient is transferred to UW Organ and Tissue Donation Service.
2. Organ procurement coordinator enters orders using the BDD order set via delegation protocol.
3. Once the order set has been initiated, the organ procurement coordinator has authorization to enter
subsequent verbal orders for the patient obtained from the UW OTD medical director on call (MOC) or his
physician designee.
